چکیده

Shared bu€er switches do not su€er from head of line blocking which is a common problem in simple input bu€ering. Shared bu€er switches have previously been studied under uniform and unbalanced trac patterns. However, due to the complexity of the model, it was not possible to fully explore the performance of such a switch, in the presence of a single hot spot. In this paper, we develop a new model for an ATM switch constructed from shared bu€ered switching elements, and operating under a hot spot trac pattern. Hot spot trac is one of more realistic trac in ATM switching. The model is validated by comparison with simulation results. The model is used to study the switch performance in terms of throughput, cell delay, cell loss probability and the optimal bu€er utilization. Numerical results show that, in the presence of hot spot trac, shared bu€er switches degrade more signi®cantly than switches with dedicated input and/or output bu€ers. The model can be used by switch designers to optimize the design and performance of switches. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Fully Distributed Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of an Improved Non-Uniform Traveling Wave Structure

Modeling and simulation of communication circuits at high frequency are important challenges ahead in the design and construction of these circuits. Knowing the fact that the lumped element model is not valid at high frequency, distributed analysis is presented based on active and passive transmission lines theory. In this paper, a lossy transmission line model of traveling wave switch (TWSW) i...

Figure 21: Gateway Throughput vs. Oered Load for Various Transmit Buer Sizes 6.4 Eect of Transmit Buer Size

24 The experiments that study the eect of the transmit buer size indicate that under very bursty trac conditions , the maximum allowable transmit buer size of 256 KB (68 full size fddi frames) is not sucient for obtaining zero cell loss in the gateway. At high loads and with adequately fast npe, restricted transmit buer capacity can cause signicant cell loss and loss in throughput. It has also ...

Queueing Analysis of Shared Bu er Switches for ATM Networks

A model for the analysis of ATM switches based on shared buuer switching for Broadband ISDN networks is developed, and the results are compared with the simulation. Switches constructed from shared buuer switching elements (SE) no longer suuer from the head of line blocking which is a common problem in simple input buuering. The analysis models the state of the entire switch and extends the mod...

An Analytical Model and Performance Analysis of Shared Buffer ATM Switches under Non-uniform Traffic

For uniform traffic, ATM switches employing shared buffering have lower cell loss probability and better buffer utilization than other buffering strategies. However, the performance of shared-buffer switches degrades dramatically under non-uniform traffic. Traffic nonuniformity is inherent in telecommunications, and is likely to be present in ATM networks because of the different characteristic...
